    Locale Clipping

Sara Hyland writes, “This restaurant and lounge hotspot boasts a crisp white interior with a minimalist yet elegant charm. Owned by by restauranter Willie Rhine and photographer John Paschal, the two have invested a great deal in putting forward a menu with diverse culinary creations. This is a great spot to bring a date (or meet one) with a unique selection of cocktails to choose from. Take The Seducer, for example—with Hangar 1 buddha’s hand citron vodka, domaine de canton liqueur, pama, pom juice and fresh lime juice. The Grilled Scallops is a dish worth ordering, flavor packed with basil and mint.”

    ThrillList Clipping

For the very popular LA-based website Thrill List, Lizbeth Scordo writes, “So what is the newest East on the 10? We tracked down all the best new stuff in Palm Springs and the rest of the desert.”  She continues, about Eight4Nine, “This restaurant-lounge that opened last summer is exactly kind of place you’d expect Palm Springs — a dramatic, bright white space with soaring ceilings, a modern-meets-Hollywood regency design, an outdoor dining area, and a striking white onyx bar in the lounge packed with a cocktail-sipping crowd. If you’re looking to eat, try the confit chicken tacos or the grilled artichoke with smoked paprika aioli off the bar menu.”

    Tribune Clipping

For StarTribune.com, Rick Nelson reports, “On the subject of deals, the bar menu at the starkly white Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge offers seven more-than-decent $9-and-under deals (a half-size salmon Nicoise salad (pictured is the half Cobb), a sweet corn chowder garnished with succulent California crab) and proximity to the bartenders’ craft cocktail wizardry.”

    Germany Clipping 1

(English translation) “Palm Springs, California has doubled in sized and its population is known, traditionally, for eating well.  One of the latest highlights is the ultra-hip restaurant, Eight4Nine.  Located in a former post office, a minimalist culinary temple has been created to serve West Coast Modern Cuisine.  Among our favorites, the Simple Green Salad with Lime Vinaigrette and Rose Petals, and a must, the Butter Nut Squash Bread Pudding with Bacon and Salted caramel.  Reservations a must!”

    FEBRUARY 2016

    NYT Clipping

Elaine Glusac writes, “When Hollywood stars were contractually restricted to a residential radius that allowed for spontaneous meetings, Palm Springs, just over 100 miles east, offered both escape and access, drawing A-list residents like Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra…  The city’s midcentury legacy has lately attracted a new generation of fans like Leonardo DiCaprio, who bought Dinah Shore’s 1963 Donald Wexler-designed house in 2014… Though many travelers spend weeks reveling in Palm Springs modernism, surrounding communities from soak-centric Desert Hot Springs to Indio, site of the growing Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, expand the appeal of the valley, which, like the best midcentury modernist buildings here, effortlessly blends desert and design…”  And later in her story:

“…Try the shoyu pork belly ($12) or ahi tuna poke ($16) across the street at the eclectic new Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge.”

The eatery offers excellent salads, including a Niçoise piled high with house-smoked salmon, and even simple brunch dishes such as eggs Benedict or a spinach frittata are well executed.”  …Carolyn B. Travel and Leisure Clipping

“Because of its climate, Palm Springs has typically been a seasonal destination. Its population surges December through April and clears out by May. “But this summer has been on fire,” says John Paschal, a celebrity photographer and 20-year resident. I meet Paschal at the opening of his new restaurant, Eight4Nine, a large space with white patent-leather banquettes and fuchsia Louis XVI chairs. (A month later, Bravo’s Shahs of Sunset will film an episode here.) Among the guests is Bobbie Eakes, a former All My Children star who tells me she gets through the summers with a season pass to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which travels to the top of Mount San Jacinto, where it is typically 30 to 40 degrees cooler.”

    Indulge Clipping

    Ross Matthews Clipping

Reported by Xochitl Pena, “Whenever his friends visit Palm Springs, he provides two lists: one is of the places to shop; the other is of places to eat, along with what to order.  Some of his favorite eateries are Birba, Workshop Kitchen + Bar, Eight4Nine and Shanghai Reds.  “We’ve always been known for design and leisure and vacation destinations, but in the past four or five years, I think the culinary scene has really exploded in the desert,” Ross said.

    Wine Enthusiast Clipping

“Eight4Nine is the newest restaurant to open in Palm Springs’ Uptown Design District.  Taking the neighborhood’s name to heart, the eatery serves up a locally sourced menu amidst a funky, loft-like vibe of white walls, hot pink Louis XIV chairs and gallery-worthy art.  ‘It’s high energy, busy and bustling with a passionate team, and already famous for their Willa Jean’s Fried Chicken,’ says Kowal.  The former home of the Palm Springs Post Office, the minimalist but swanky atmosphere allows the not-so-minimalist culinary creations to shine.”

Before too much more time has passed, I wanted to drop you a note and thank you for the wonderful museum volunteer appreciation lunch you catered at your beautiful restaurant, Eight4Nine. This luncheon is an annual affair, usually held at a nice restaurant or country club and is generally very nice. However, in the case of Eight4Nine, there has been an outpouring of emails, cards and calls from our volunteers saying the luncheon was spectacular! The food, the service, the beautiful patio, the general feeling of hospitality was unsurpassed according to our volunteers. To put it in a nutshell, “the best we’ve ever had!”

    Thanks, Willie, you’re the best!
